This is true of disks manufactured prior to 2000. Some of the earlier disks, and cheaper media may only last 5-30 years.
However, new advances in dye formulations and production techniques, have increased longevity of dye-based DVD-R and DVD+R discs to anywhere from 70 to 250 years, about as long as CD-R discs. RW Disks will still only last for 5-30 years due to their design.
Only purchase good quality media, and it should last for your lifetime.
